Want to spend 13 weeks writing blogs and articles about sustainable development projects in a remote and exciting environment? We need volunteers from September 2017.

 

Raleigh International is a sustainable development charity, we believe in the passion and energy of young people from around the world to create long lasting positive change in some areas that need it most. We work with local people, governments and project partners to establish where our help is really needed.

 

Our programmes focus on providing access to safe water and sanitation, protecting vulnerable environments and building more resilient communities, all whilst developing the skills and confidence of young people. In order to safely and effectively run our expeditions we need volunteer managers to operate our projects and support the young volunteers.

 

When can I go?

 

Our expeditions run every January, June & July and September and we’re now recruiting for our September 2017 and January programmes in 2018.

 

Nicaragua & Costa Rica: 24 September – 19 December

Nicaragua & Costa Rica – 22 January – 18 April

Nepal – 25 January – 22 April

Malaysian Borneo – 28 January – 26 April

Tanzania – 31 January – 27 April

 

As a Communications Officer you will;

 

• Visit the project sites to gather material for the expedition blogs and social media channels
• Work closely with the expedition Photographer, volunteers and Project Managers to gather content to bring the expedition to life
• Work closely with the support team to collaboratively run the expedition fieldbase

 

We encourage all our volunteers to fund raise before the expedition. This is an unpaid voluntary position however when you are in country we will cover;

 

• All living expenses included during the expedition – food, accommodation, equipment
• Full training and support before and during the expedition
• Travel and medical insurance included
• In country transport

Earth Day Network seeks a dynamic and energetic individual to handle a range of environmental education and green school campaigns as Education Director. As Education Director, responsibilities include:

• Maintaining EDN’s flagship programs, including National Civic Education Project (NCEP), a program engages urban students in civic-minded lessons in environmentally degraded areas, Climate Education Week, National School Lunch Week, Earth Day, school facility greenings, and more.
• Coordinating with Earth Day Network staff on the five year plan for the 50^thanniversary of Earth Day.
• Creating and providing access to quality educational resources and materials for teachers to promote environmental and climate education in and out of the classroom.
• Building a sustained education, advocacy and media campaign on green schools, the national school lunch program, climate education, and student advocacy initiatives.
• Establishing and maintaining partnerships with local and national organizations, schools, teachers, students and other educational and environmental partners.
• Maintaining a digital and online presence, including creation of online and web-based education materials, creating and updating webpage content, building digital media and communicating and expanding EDN’s Educators’ Network.
• Collaborate with Education Department and other staff to manage incoming requests for book/article contributions, curriculum creation, media relations, etc. as needed.
• Supporting departmental and organizational commitments with various projects as assigned, such as Earth Day.
• Working to create and pass national, state, and local public policies to provide funding mechanisms for green schools and ensuring comprehensive climate and environmental education.
• Recruiting, hiring, administrating, and managing Education Staff and Interns.
• Assisting the Development Department in the execution of fundraising opportunities, including research and writing, specific to education-related programming.
• Representing Earth Day Network and the Education Department at events, conferences, panels, etc.

The Education Director will be heavily involved in several or all of these initiatives and will likely include travel to events or projects throughout the year, especially on or around Earth Day.

 

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s strongly preferred.
• A strong interest in and knowledge of current environmental issues is required.
• A strong interest in and knowledge of K-12 education (environmental, civics, STEM, and/or education itself, in addition to lesson planning experience) is required; teaching certification and classroom experience is preferred.
• A strong interest in and knowledge of non-formal and experiential education is preferred.
• Project management experience is required; event planning experience is preferred.
• Strong organizational skills and the ability to perform multiple tasks in adherence to strict deadlines are required.
• Excellent research and communication skills (verbal and written) is required.
• Technological experience with strong computer skills in education technology, digital media, and web development
• Experience as a team player and leader, with outstanding interpersonal skills is required.
• Willingness to travel within the U.S.

PROTECTING WHITE MOUNTAIN ALPINE VEGETATION

 

The joint U.S. Forest Service (USFS)/Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Alpine Stewardship Volunteer program started in 2000, sparked by the dedicated interest of a few individuals. Today the program has developed new partnerships with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and expanded its efforts to include both Franconia Ridge and the Mt. Washington summit.

 

The AMC, USFS, and ATC hope to increase the public’s awareness of its impact on the alpine environment and educate visitors about preservation of alpine vegetation. The volunteer Alpine Stewards address topics such as the importance of staying on the trail, prevention of “summit sprawl,” Leave No Trace ethics, alpine safety and low-impact trail tending. While on the trail, Stewards respond to questions or concerns of hikers and engage visitors in a friendly, educational manner.

 

ALPINE STEWARD QUALITIES

 

• Individuals interested in applying should:

 

• Have a friendly, outgoing, professional manner, in addition to experience working with the public in a recreational setting.

 

• Have extensive hiking experience and an understanding of AMC and the White Mountain National Forest.

 

• Are committed to the protection of the alpine zone and the promotion of Leave No Trace ethics.

 

• Have comfort in approaching individuals to provide educational conservation and safety information.

 

• Hold a current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification;or are willing to be certified.

 

• Can provide coverage at least two weekends per year.

 

• Can attend the annual training held one weekend in the spring.

 

• Are AMC members.

 

In addition, Alpine Stewards also:

 

• Demonstrate appropriate alpine zone behavior and Leave No Trace ethics and approach hikers to provide education on these matters as well as ecology, Forest Service backcountry camping regulations, and low-impact trail tending.

 

• Provide information to visitors about safety concerns, particularly regarding weather.

 

• Participate in AMC’s Mountain Watch program by monitoring plant phenology stages and collecting data for AMC research.

• Partners provide the following support for alpine stewards:

 

• Room and board on the weekends they serve at Greenleaf hut or Joe Dodge Lodge.

 

• Gear and uniform to use while working.

 

• Recognition for their efforts through Stewardship Society awards, based on the number of hours contributed annually.

***  TEN THINGS YOU SHOULD BRING ON EVERY HIKE

1. Appropriate footwear. For a short day hike that doesn’t involve a heavy pack or technical terrain, trailshoesare great. For longer hikes, carrying heavier loads, or more technical terrain, hiking boots offer more support.

 

2. Map and compass/GPS. A map andcompass not only tell you where you are and how far you have to go, it can help you find campsites, water, and an emergency exit route in case of an accident. While GPS units are very useful, always carry a map and compass as a backup.

 

3. Extra water and a way to purify it. Without enoughwater, your body’s muscles and organs simply can’t perform as well. Consuming too little water will not only make you thirsty, but susceptible to hypothermia and altitude sickness.

 

4. Extra food. Any number of things could keep you out longer than expected: getting lost, enjoying time by a stream, an injury, or difficult terrain. Extra food will help keep up energy and morale.

 

5. Rain gear and extra clothing. Because the weatherman is not always right.Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to changing weather and activity levels. Two rules: avoid cotton (it keeps moisture close to your skin) and always carry a hat.

 

6. Safety items: fire, light, and a whistle. The warmth of afire and a hot drink can help prevent hypothermia. Fires are also a great way to signal for help if you get lost. If lost, you’ll also want the whistle as it is more effective than using your voice to call for help (use 3 short bursts). And just in case you’re out later than planned, a flashlight/headlamp is a must-have item to see your map and where you’re walking.

 

7. First aid kit. Prepackagedfirst-aid kits for hikers are available at any outfitter. Double your effectiveness with knowledge: take a first-aid class with the American Red Cross or a Wilderness First Aid class.

 

8. Knife or multi-purpose tool. These enable you to cut strips of cloth into bandages, remove splinters, fix broken eyeglasses, and perform a whole host of repairs on malfunctioning gear.

 

9. Sun screen and sun glasses. Especially above treeline when there is a skin-scorching combination ofsunand snow, you’ll need sunglasses to prevent snow blindness and sunscreen to prevent sunburn.

 

10. Daypack/backpack. You’ll want something you can carry comfortably and has the features designed to keep you hiking smartly. Don’t forget the rain cover; some packs come with one built-in. Keep the other Essentials in thepack and you’ll always be ready to hit the trail safely.
