1.)  Communications Officer on International Expeditions (Voluntary, living expenses provided), Raleigh International, Projects based in Tanzania, Costa Rica and Nicaragua, Borneo and Nepal

Are you a keen writer or blogger?

Raleigh International is looking for enthusiastic and creative people to join our international expeditions as a Communications Officers. Want to spend 13 weeks writing blogs and articles about sustainable development projects in a remote and exciting environment? We need volunteers from September 2017.

Raleigh International is a sustainable development charity, we believe in the passion and energy of young people from around the world to create long lasting positive change in some areas that need it most. We work with local people, governments and project partners to establish where our help is really needed.

Our programmes focus on providing access to safe water and sanitation, protecting vulnerable environments and building more resilient communities, all whilst developing the skills and confidence of young people. In order to safely and effectively run our expeditions we need volunteer managers to operate our projects and support the young volunteers.

When can I go?

Our expeditions run every January, June & July and September and we’re now recruiting for our September 2017 and January programmes in 2018.

*** Premium service in Kuala Lumpur:

My flight from Langkawi to Kuala Lumppur was delayed because of the airshow flight demonstrations. Even after we boarded and were number one for take off we had to wait (presumably for more air show demos) which the plane got warmer and warmer. I had suffcient time to make my connect to Bangkok, so I thought, but I was looking forward to sampling the premium plaza service arranged for me by my friend Nik Anis.

The “VIP Meet and Greet Service” might be helpful in making my connection and finding some time to relax, Anis said. The Premium Plaza Lounge offers the service, which they say “takes away all the airport hassle by providing a seamless end-to-end airport experience.”

They provide “personal assistance to and from the gate, baggage handling and delivery, limousine transfer and buggy service, to let our guests breeze through the airport.”

My airport concierge was Lukman. He was waiting at the gate, and I was already frazzeled because of the delay coming from Langkawi had shredded by connection time. We had to claim my bags at KUL and then check them in again for my next flight. Of course my bags were the last two off the plane. Lukman navigated us through the airport and up to the busy departures hall and took me straight to the Thaiu desk.

Since I had two connecting flights after Bangkok on Star Alliance member Ethiopian I was hoping my bags could be checked through to Accra. I was unable to book a through ticket, but they were able to check my bags through and issue my three bording passes.

I then was taken to expedited screening and immigration control. Lukman took me to the louge, where they were expecting me. I ponly had time for a quick cold drink and a few desert goodies since my flight was already boarding. We took the train to the departure gate area, and Lukman’s colleague was waiting with the Buggy to take me to the gate. She said she could get the cart up to 20 lph, but there were few straightaways to test that out. Nevertheless, I was riding in style. At the gate I bid Lukman adiew, and knew I would have had a very toiugh time making my tight connection without him.

Hidden Villa’s Residential Internship Program is contributing to the next generation of thoughtful educators, innovative organic farmers, and creative non-profit leaders. This 9-12 month residential internship provides hand-on departmental work experience, Weekly Educational Workshops (Monday Classes) focused on sustainable systems, education and non-profit leadership, completion of a Special Projects that contribures to organizational goals set forth in our Strategic Plan, access to the Hidden Villa Intern Alumni Network, and mentorship opportunities to further career goals.

Internships are offered in several departments: Animal Husbandry, Environmental Education, Sustainable Agriculture, Journeyman Farmer, Public Programs, Development and Visitor Services.

3.) VOLUNTEERS, Cape Tribulation Research Station, directed by AUSTROP, Australian Wet Tropics World Heritage Area, Australia

Volunteers assist in research and Station activities:

• Radio-tracking bats
• Counting figs
• Stomping grass for forest regeneration
• Constructing Station buildings
• Digging holes
• Running the Bat House (Austrop’s Visitor Center)
• Whatever else is necessary!
• They are our lifeblood! The normal stay is 2-3 weeks but extensions are available at the discretion of the Director (and are rarely refused).

Be prepared to be the only volunteer for a week or so. Self-motivation and independence are essential, but teamwork is essential when working with others.

An interest in conservation, the environment or native species – both flora and fauna, would be an added bonus.

You should NOT expect to be tagging around behind a learned scientist for the duration of your stay or have your own project – but it still will be a thoroughly worthwhile experience!

Vaccinations
As we have a colony of spectacled flying foxes – which are our educational animals, it is a requirement for volunteers, interns, students and researchers to have a current rabies vaccination. They are a long-captive colony and are clean – but we are obliged to require anyone who wants to work on bats (any bats), or interact with them, to be immunised. It is highly unlikely that you would contract Australian Bat Lyssavirus (a form of rabies, and an extremely rare disease) from contact with them, however it’s better to be safe than sorry (and it’s the law)!

If you are not vaccinated – you won’t be allowed near the bats, which would be a shame. Besides, if you are travelling, especially in Asia, vaccination against rabies is considered wise.

Multi-day trips are generally between 2 and 6 days, and would require being “in the field”. Some single day programs would be included as well.

Applicants are expected to be fully licensed and experienced guides, with previous experience on the stretches of river we work on (although they may work for one or two programs as a swamper – at training rate compensation – in order to gain experience on a given stretch). Furthermore, they may be scheduled as “Trip Leaders” on some programs, and need to be capable of doing so.

Regular housing (when not in the field) would not be provided,. Meals would be provided during actual programming and while in the field.

Pay rate TBD, dependent on actual duties performed and experience.

Season beginning/ending dependent on actual bookings – starting April 1 and going through May 31 (although there is a possibility of extension).

QUALIFICATIONS:

* Minimum age of 21
* Current Utah River Guide/Captain’s License
* Current Wilderness First Responder (or other 40+ hour equivalent), including CPR and general First Aid
* Utah Food Handler’s certificate
* Clean driving record (MVR required with application)
* Previous experience working in guiding, outfitting, etc.

* Cover letter
* Resume
* 3 references: name, email, phone. At least 2 should be employment related
* Copy of driver’s license

PROTECTING WHITE MOUNTAIN ALPINE VEGETATION

The joint U.S. Forest Service (USFS)/Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) Alpine Stewardship Volunteer program started in 2000, sparked by the dedicated interest of a few individuals. Today the program has developed new partnerships with the Appalachian Trail Conservancy (ATC) and expanded its efforts to include both Franconia Ridge and the Mt. Washington summit.

The AMC, USFS, and ATC hope to increase the public’s awareness of its impact on the alpine environment and educate visitors about preservation of alpine vegetation. The volunteer Alpine Stewards address topics such as the importance of staying on the trail, prevention of “summit sprawl,” Leave No Trace ethics, alpine safety and low-impact trail tending. While on the trail, Stewards respond to questions or concerns of hikers and engage visitors in a friendly, educational manner.

ALPINE STEWARD QUALITIES

  • Individuals interested in applying should:

  • Have a friendly, outgoing, professional manner, in addition to experience working with the public in a recreational setting.

  • Have extensive hiking experience and an understanding of AMC and the White Mountain National Forest.

  • Are committed to the protection of the alpine zone and the promotion of Leave No Trace ethics.

  • Have comfort in approaching individuals to provide educational conservation and safety information.

  • Hold a current Wilderness First Aid and CPR certification;or are willing to be certified.

  • Can provide coverage at least two weekends per year.

  • Can attend the annual training held one weekend in the spring.

  • Are AMC members.

In addition, Alpine Stewards also:

  • Demonstrate appropriate alpine zone behavior and Leave No Trace ethics and approach hikers to provide education on these matters as well as ecology, Forest Service backcountry camping regulations, and low-impact trail tending.

  • Provide information to visitors about safety concerns, particularly regarding weather.

  • Participate in AMC’s Mountain Watch program by monitoring plant phenology stages and collecting data for AMC research.

SUPPORT

  • Partners provide the following support for alpine stewards:

  • Room and board on the weekends they serve at Greenleaf hut or Joe Dodge Lodge.

  • Gear and uniform to use while working.

  • Recognition for their efforts through Stewardship Society awards, based on the number of hours contributed annually.

  • Discounts on AMC retail merchandise while volunteering.

***  TEN THINGS YOU SHOULD BRING ON EVERY HIKE

From the American Hiking Society

  1. Appropriate footwear. For a short day hike that doesn’t involve a heavy pack or technical terrain, trailshoesare great. For longer hikes, carrying heavier loads, or more technical terrain, hiking boots offer more support.

  1. Map and compass/GPS. A map andcompass not only tell you where you are and how far you have to go, it can help you find campsites, water, and an emergency exit route in case of an accident. While GPS units are very useful, always carry a map and compass as a backup.

  1. Extra water and a way to purify it. Without enoughwater, your body’s muscles and organs simply can’t perform as well. Consuming too little water will not only make you thirsty, but susceptible to hypothermia and altitude sickness.

  1. Extra food. Any number of things could keep you out longer than expected: getting lost, enjoying time by a stream, an injury, or difficult terrain. Extra food will help keep up energy and morale.

  1. Rain gear and extra clothing. Because the weatherman is not always right.Dressing in layers allows you to adjust to changing weather and activity levels. Two rules: avoid cotton (it keeps moisture close to your skin) and always carry a hat.

  1. Safety items: fire, light, and a whistle. The warmth of afire and a hot drink can help prevent hypothermia. Fires are also a great way to signal for help if you get lost. If lost, you’ll also want the whistle as it is more effective than using your voice to call for help (use 3 short bursts). And just in case you’re out later than planned, a flashlight/headlamp is a must-have item to see your map and where you’re walking.

  1. First aid kit. Prepackagedfirst-aid kits for hikers are available at any outfitter. Double your effectiveness with knowledge: take a first-aid class with the American Red Cross or a Wilderness First Aid class.

  1. Knife or multi-purpose tool. These enable you to cut strips of cloth into bandages, remove splinters, fix broken eyeglasses, and perform a whole host of repairs on malfunctioning gear.

  1. Sun screen and sun glasses. Especially above treeline when there is a skin-scorching combination ofsunand snow, you’ll need sunglasses to prevent snow blindness and sunscreen to prevent sunburn.

  1. Daypack/backpack. You’ll want something you can carry comfortably and has the features designed to keep you hiking smartly. Don’t forget the rain cover; some packs come with one built-in. Keep the other Essentials in thepack and you’ll always be ready to hit the trail safely.

The IVHQ Sri Lanka volunteer program is based  in the sacred city of Kandy, with placements  located  in and around the city and further afield. The Rural Community Development project is based in both Hanguranketha in Nuwara Eliya and in the surrounding areas of Sigiriya, in the Central Matale District. The Wild Elephant Conservation project is based in the Wasgamuwa National Park.

Volunteers on the Sri Lanka Temple Renovation program learn about local construction methods, while assisting with temple painting and construction, as well as helping to establish youth centers. By working alongside locals and meeting children within the village, volunteers may gain a deeper appreciation and understanding of Sri Lankan culture and history. This program starts from one week at $260. – See more at: https://www.volunteerforever.com/article_post/2016-best-volunteer-abroad-programs-organizations-projects#sthash.hjRfPLrc.dpuf
