“There was a young man of Quebec
Who was frozen in snow to his neck,
When asked, ‘Are you Friz?’
He replied, ‘Yes I is,
But we don’t call this cold in Quebec.’”
—Attributed to Rudyard Kipling as recalled by Stephen Leacock (1937)
“The journey of a thousand miles begins with one step.”

*** Yellowknife
Yellowknife is the capital and largest community the the vast area known as Canada’s Northwest Territories (NT or NWT).
About 40,000 people live in NWT, an area of nearly a half million square miles (NWT used to be much bigger until Canada created a sepearte territory called Nunuvut (Altogether, Canada’s three territories of Ykon, NWT and Nunuvut have about 113,000 people—so thats a lot of land for not a lot of people). About half of them live in Yellowknike, a city with streetlights, hotels, parking metrers and parking garages, multi-story buildings and a Wal-Mart. No other city in NWT has all those things. In fact, there are n other cities in NWT. NWT has several official languages, including English, French, Chipewyan, Cree, Gwich’in, Inuinnaqtun, Inuktitut, Inuvialuktun, North Slavey, South Slavey and Tłı̨chǫ. NWT goes from “way up there” to “way, way, way up there,” far above the Arctic Circle. It is cold here in winter (it can get down to -60 F/-50 C), as you would expect, but it gets hotter in the summer than you would think (the record high is 90 F / 32 C). Mining led to development in this part of Canada, and is still an important economic engine, with gold on the wane and a rise in diamond mining. The Canadian Forces Joint Task Force North is located here, and they are my hosts for Operation Nanook-Nunalivut 2019, taking us to Resolute (which is in Nunvut), Inuvik and Tuktoyaktuk.
While Yellowknife has air connections to the outside world, there are also small airlines that serve the very remote communities and camps. They use planes equipped with floats in the summer; skis in the winter; and wheels in between. Today I saw one landing on the ice-covered lake. There are ice roads up here that connect communities with shortcuts–like Yellowknife to Hay River, for example–in the winter.
